Yes, unless you meet at least one of the following conditions:

you are a member of the Teachers' Pension Plan (TPP);
   
you are at least 53 years old and a member of the Régime de retraite des fonctionnaires (RRF), the Régime de retraite de certains enseignants (RRCE), or the Régime de retraite des employés du gouvernement et des organismes publics (RREGOP);
   
you are a member of a professional association and insured under a similar group insurance benefit; or
   
you will be retiring within two years without the option of returning.

When am I eligible to join?

You are eligible to join immediately if you are already working for the school board.

Otherwise, you are eligible to join on one of the following dates:

Must I submit proof of good health?

No, unless you are part-time teacher and you apply for coverage only after 60 days from the date you became eligible.

How do I enroll?

  1. Complete a Participation Request form.

  2. If you are part-time teacher and you apply at least 60 days after the date you became eligible, you must also provide proof of good health at your own expense.

  3. Give the completed form (and proof of good health, if required) to your school board.

When does coverage begin?

  That depends, as follows:

Coverage will take effect on the date you are eligible for coverage, provided you apply for coverage at that time.

You must be actively at work on the date you are eligible for coverage.

Otherwise, coverage will take effect on the date you return to work.

Coverage will take effect on the first day of the month following the date your school board receives the approval from Industrial Alliance.

If Industrial Alliance has not yet approved your application within 30 days after receiving your final proof of good health, coverage will take effect on the first day of the month after that 30-day period.

You must be actively at work on the date you are eligible for coverage.

Otherwise, coverage will take effect on the date you return to work.

How do I opt out?

The following applies to full-time teachers only, since participation for part-time teachers is entirely optional.

As a full-time teacher, you need to:

   
1. Complete a Participation Request form.
   
2. On the form, indicate if:
   
  you are a member of the Teachers' Pension Plan (TPP);
     
  you are at least 53 years old and a member of the Régime de retraite des fonctionnaires (RRF), the Régime de retraite de certains enseignants (RRCE), or the Régime de retraite des employés du gouvernement et des organismes publics (RREGOP);
     
  you are a member of a professional association and insured under a similar group insurance benefit; you must attach proof that your insurance is in force, along with a copy of the policy;
     
  you are retiring without the option of returning, provided you retire within two years from the date you request to opt out of this Plan; you must attach a copy of the departure agreement.
   
3. Give the completed form and any other required documents to your school board.

If I opt out, can I rejoin the Plan later?

No, unless you have a part-time contract and are rehired.
