Who is eligible to join?

Is participation mandatory?

No. It's your choice.

When can I join?

You can apply to join the Life Insurance Plan and the Additional Life Insurance Plan at any time if you are already working for the school board.

If you are not already in the employer's service, you can join as early as the following applicable date:

Note: If you are a part-time teacher, you may be eligible to join only once your contract is confirmed.

When can my dependents join?

Your spouse and dependent children can join the Dependent Life Insurance Plan at any time once:

   
you join the Life Insurance Plan; or
   
they become eligible, according to the Plan's definitions, if later.

If your dependents apply later, proof of good health will be required.

Is proof of good health required?

Yes, in the following instances ONLY:

If you apply within 60 days of your eligibility date: Proof of good health is required for any coverage exceeding $75,000.

If you apply over 60 days after your eligibility date: Proof of good health is required for any amount of coverage.

If you wish to increase your current coverage: Proof of good health is required for any amount of coverage.

Additional Life Insurance Plan

Proof of good health is required for any amount of coverage.

Dependent Life Insurance Plan

Proof of good health is required for your dependents if you did NOT apply for their coverage when you joined the Life Insurance Plan.

Proof of good health must be provided at your own expense.

How do I join?

  1. Complete a Participation Request form.

  2. Be sure to designate a beneficiary.

  3. If applicable, submit proof of good health.

  4. Return the completed form—and any proof of good health—to your school board.

Proof of good health is required for any amount of coverage.

Coverage will take effect on the first day of the month following the date your school board receives the approval from Industrial Alliance.

If Industrial Alliance has not yet approved your application within 30 days after receiving your final proof of good health, coverage will take effect on the first day of the month after that 30-day period.

Reminder:
You must choose the maximum amount of coverage under the Life Insurance Plan
(i.e., $150,000) before you can buy coverage under the Additional Life Insurance Plan.

Coverage up to $75,000 will take effect on the date you are eligible for coverage, provided you apply for coverage at that time.

  the date Industrial Alliance receives the application, provided your spouse and dependent children are eligible, according to the Plan's definitions.
