Full-time teachers
   
Part-time teachers
   
Eligible dependents: spouse and dependent children

Is participation mandatory?

No. It's your choice.

Why should I join if I already have life insurance?

Accident insurance pays benefits in addition to life insurance in the event of an accidental death. In addition, unlike life insurance, accident insurance pays benefits should you or a covered dependent suffer an accidental injury. This coverage is especially important if anyone in your family is accident prone or involved in sports that could lead to a serious injury.

When can I join?

You can apply to join at any time if you are already working for the school board.

If you are not already in the employer's service, you can join as early as the following applicable date:

Before or on the first working day of the work year

The first working day of the work year

Note: If you are a part-time teacher, you may be eligible to join only once your contract is confirmed.

Any other day during the work year The day your contract is scheduled to begin

When can my dependents join?

Your spouse and dependent children can join at any time once:

   
you join the Plan; or
   
they become eligible, according to the Plan's definitions, if later.

Is proof of good health required?

No.

How do I join?

  1. Complete an application form.

  2. Be sure to indicate whether you want single coverage or family coverage (you and your family). You should also designate a beneficiary.

  3. Return the completed form to your school board.

Can I cover only my family?

No. You must be covered if you wish to cover your family.

 

When does coverage begin?

For you
   
  Coverage begins on the first day of the month following the date Industrial Alliance receives your application.
   
For your eligible dependents
   
  Coverage begins on the latest of the following dates:
     
  the date on which your coverage takes effect;
     
  the date on which your spouse and dependent children become eligible, according to the Plan's definitions; and
     
  the date Industrial Alliance receives the application, provided your spouse and dependent children are eligible, according to the Plan's definitions.
